Skateboarding, or skateboard culture, arrived in Finland on a wider scale in the 1980s. Since then, it has
become an established part of the imagery of Finnish youth and urban culture. The FLIP! Skateboarding
& Art exhibition at Artsi reflects on how skateboarding as a subculture has influenced visual artists who
practice it, and how skateboarding has been interpreted within contemporary visual art.
When the surface of an artwork is scratched, does one still find beneath it a “skate rat” marked by asphalt
rash and street dust, or something entirely different? The FLIP! Skateboarding & Art exhibition seeks
connections between the visual language of skateboarding, do-it-yourself culture, and the works of
contemporary visual artists.
The FLIP! Skateboarding & Art exhibition presents a diverse selection of works by contemporary artists
and explores the visual culture connected to the world of skateboarding. The exhibition has been realized
through collaboration between the Vantaa Art Museum Artsi and an expert group specializing in
skateboarding culture.
